Sunday Night Book Club

About 4 years ago I helped start up a book club with a group of "internet friends" that I barely knew a thing about except for what vendors they used for their weddings and what information was shared about ourselves in random 'conversations' we exchanged on a local chat board.

We committed to meeting once a month. Over food and drinks we'd gather at one of our homes, most often on a Sunday evening, for indepth conversations about the book we just read. Those first few month were awkward. Barely knowing eachother, I think we spent an equal amount of our night together actually discussing the book, which is what we were there for, and also sitting in awkward silence deciding what else we could say.

We had a few 'members' who have come and gone, though now I couldn't tell you where most of them are, or even a few of their names. And so our little group became a close-knit group of six who over the years have gone from perfect stangers to real-life friends.

Now when we meet on a Sunday night we're lucky if half of us have actually read the book. But that doesn't stop us from gathering together.

We started out as a group of newlywed women with all the time in the world to devote to reading our books and spending an entire Sunday evening together laughing and having a good time. As the years have gone by, most of us have found ourselves struggling to finish a book, or even starting it for that matter, because for some of us our newlywed days have turned into parenting days. And kids don't quite often let you sneak away for a day to yourself to sit and read your book.

Many times we'd show up to meet only to find out not a single one of us had even opened the book, or that only a few of us were able make it. Sometimes we'd go months without meeting at all. Maybe for most people this would have signified the end, but for us it seemed to bring us closer together. If we hadn't read the book, we passed the time talking about various other things in our lives; Our homes, our kids, our husbands and even our jobs. In fact even if we did read the book, we found ourselves spending the whole time talking about those other things anyway.

We started to use the term 'Book Club' very loosely. My husband would say "is that what you're still calling it?" when I'd announce I was hosting my friends on an upcoming Sunday night. To him it was more of an excuse to have friends over, or to sneak off to meet them someplace else. And when we'd mention our little club in front of others, they instant became curious of what we read and when we met, and I think alot of times we found ourselves reluctant to give out information or let them in on our little secret. Not that we wouldn't have enjoyed their company, the more the merrier as they say, but more for the fact that we had become so used to it being just us and we were content with the way things were.

We have become somewhat of a support group to eachother. A place to vent our frustrations and also to share our joys. Although we do still make an honest attempt to read a book and be present together on Sunday night, we do spend a good part of our time together catching up on our lives and truly enjoying our time together. Gone are the days of awkward silence. They have been replaced with constant laughter and innocent banter. Hopefully for years to come.

For Real This Time

One of my New Years Resolutions is going to be this blog! I have got to get back into the swing of things and get this bad boy updated! My first task is to find a fun background..I'm jealous of all the cute blogger sites I see and I still have this same old boring background. :( Thanks goodness I found these!

If you're still staring at a plain ol' grey background...it either didn't work or I'm to indecisive and can't just pick one. Or maybe I'll like so many I'll have to change it up each day..which would require me to come here everyday and that might actually get me to write something! Hollar!

Catch Up..

Once again I've been neglecting the old blog. It's not that I haven't had time, it's just that I'm boring. I literally do not want to bore you with the details. :)

But I suppose I can come up with some random things to post...I mean, come on. It's been over two months since I posted...something interesting had to happen in the last 60 days.

- Well I guess first off, I did survive the big 3 - 0! It hasn't been as bad as I thought it would be...mostly because I try not to think about it. When I do, I panic. I'd share some pictures with you of the big ta-do we had, but most of them are after I started doing shots and right before I threw up in the parking lot. Not pretty.

- We have all 5 boys in school this year! Wow...I can't believe my two little guys are old enough for school. Time sure flies! They are having a blast, and I am pulling my hair out trying to keep the schedules of 5 different schools straight. There should be some kind of medal for parents that have to juggle all these different schedules...Better yet, we should be named Saints.

- Scott's recovering from knee surgery that he had at the beginning of the month...he's actually pretty much fully recovered...at least that's my opinion. He went back to work this week. Which means the house is a complete mess. It was fun watching him try and mow the lawn and vaccum and get up and down the stairs on cruches to do laundry. :) I didn't feel sorry for him when he whined about how his knew hurt from all the work he was trying to do. He was supposed to be resting and taking it easy...all that cleaning and laundry would have been waiting for him when he felt better. :)

- My 'baby' turned 3 this weekend. Kind of makes me sad. I can't really call him my baby anymore, can I? I guess I can, but in about 2 more years he probably won't like being referred to as "the baby" anymore. Makes me want to have another one....but only for a second...then I get my scenses back.

Slacker

I have been neglecting the ol' blog for quite some time now. Not for lack of anything to talk about, thats for sure. More like alot I don't want to talk about. :) It's been a crazy few months.

We are well into July, and this month has been busy for sure! So much going on. They days seem to fly by fast. We had a great 4th of July. Some out of town friends came over for a BBQ along with some friends here in town and alot of my family. The kids enjoyed the fireworks more then I thought they would, which was a pleasant surprise. I wasn't sure what was going to happen if they ended up being scared out of their mind about them, especially with HUGE display our neighbors put on; Super loud, but Super Cool!

Scott and I just celebrated our 5th Anniversary this past weekend. Man, the time has sure flown by. I can't even believe it! In honor of that; A favorite Wedding photo.

Next up: The big 3-0 at the end of the month...YIKES!

Bless You!

On the way to daycare this morning Noah had the hiccups. So Christian decided that he needed to "sneeze" everytime Noah hiccuped. I think he thought Noah was faking the hiccups since they think it's funny to fake sneezing all the time. I asked Noah "Noah, Do you have the hiccups?" To which Christian replied "No, I have the bless you's!"

I'm cool like that, I'm cool like that, I'm cool like that, I'm cool like that...

I'm CUTE like that...

I hope you had the time of your lives....

For the past four years I have been involved with a youth group program at our church called "Godparents". The name is kind of deceiving, in that when most people hear it they do not automatically think "teenage youth group", they think we are training people to be godparents or something. Which is far from what we do. I like to think that we are "training" teenagers to live their lives in faith..with God always being a huge part of what they do...how they live.

We started out with a small group of freshman. We met every Wednesday night during the school year with the same group of kids from the beginning of their freshman year until they all graduated from High School at the end of May. For the most part we had the same 10 kids over the course of four years...at some point we had as many as 12, but no less then 10. I was one of their "godparents". My partner in crime was the mother of one of the boys in our group. We met at their house every week..mostly because she had the room for all these teenagers, and didn't already have a house full of kids like me. :)

I can truly say that this was one of the best experiences of my life. Getting to know these kids, meeting with them every week. Watching them grow in their faith. Sharing their lives and dreams with us each week. I will truly miss each and everyone of them. I wish them all nothing but the best in life and hope that God looks over each of them in all that they do.
